Comoros Repatriates 28 Gold Bars to Madagascar, Easing Diplomatic Strains

Comoros returned 28 gold bars to Madagascar, resolving a diplomatic dispute that stemmed from a smuggling operation. The bars were seized in 2021, leading to arrests in both countries. A joint statement confirmed their return and emphasized cooperation against illegal trafficking.

On Friday, Comoros returned 28 gold bars to Madagascar, effectively resolving a diplomatic dispute that had created tensions between the two nations. The gold, weighing 49 kilograms (108 pounds), was confiscated at Comoros’ main airport in 2021, linked to a smuggling operation involving individuals traveling to Dubai from Madagascar.

The investigation prompted the swift repatriation of two suspects, both from Madagascar, who were subsequently tried in their home country. Furthermore, five Comorian nationals, including a former airport director and a customs officer, were arrested and sentenced in 2022 for their roles in the illegal operation.

Despite these arrests, Comoros had initially withheld the seized gold, leading Madagascar to suspend air and sea links as a sign of protest. A joint statement from both governments confirmed the gold’s return, signaling the resolution of the diplomatic dispute between them.

The statement emphasized that the “legal proceedings and diplomatic exchanges initiated between the two countries have enabled the competent… authorities, to proceed today with the repatriation of these bars to Madagascar.” It further highlighted that this action illustrates the “good neighbourly relations and cooperation” between the nations, reinforcing their mutual commitment to combatting illegal trafficking.

The return of the 28 gold bars from Comoros to Madagascar marks a significant step in mending bilateral relations after a period of tension caused by smuggling allegations. This act not only resolves a legal issue but also reinforces diplomatic ties and mutual cooperation in addressing illegal activities between the two nations.
