Discovery of Bodies in Sudan Highlights Civil War Atrocities

Red Crescent volunteers discovered multiple bodies in a well in Sharg Elnil, Sudan, highlighting the violence following the recapture of the area from paramilitary fighters. Most victims were shot in the head, with some suggesting they were alive when thrown in. This incident reflects the ongoing brutal conflict between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces, with allegations of widespread abuses surfacing.

In Sharg Elnil, Sudan, recently reclaimed by government forces from paramilitary control, Red Crescent volunteers discovered and retrieved bodies from a well, prompting grave concerns over potential killings. The victims, numbering 15, mostly exhibited gunshot wounds to the head, with some indications they may have been alive when disposed of in the well, according to Hisham Zain al-Abdin, the director of forensic medicine for Khartoum state.

In addition to the bodies retrieved from the well, others have been found along roadsides and hidden in the district’s basements, with reports indicating that some victims were bound. Zain al-Abdin remarked, “A lot of things happened here, and horrific scenes.” This discovery comes as government forces, nearly two years into Sudan’s Civil War, regain territories previously held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The authority has indicated a concerning trend of killings in regions that were once under RSF dominance. The RSF has not addressed these allegations directly, but has consistently rejected claims of widespread abuses during its control, asserting that any wrongdoing would be addressed, while in turn accusing the army of similar actions.

Hussein al-Faki, a local resident who informed authorities about the bodies, described a chilling atmosphere during RSF occupancy, stating villagers attempted to relocate the victims but were threatened by armed men. He recounted, “If you got closer, they would shoot you. They scared us, so we ran away and left them.”

Reporting by Eltayeb Siddig and writing by Nafisa Eltahir illustrate the human tragedy unfolding in the aftermath of two years of conflict in Sudan, highlighting the frequent violence faced by civilians in these contested areas.

The recent discovery of bodies in Sharg Elnil sheds light on the brutality experienced during Sudan’s ongoing Civil War, particularly in regions previously controlled by paramilitary forces. With growing evidence of killings and violence, the situation raises significant concerns for human rights and the safety of local residents. As the government continues to reclaim territory, the need for accountability and thorough investigations into these incidents is paramount.
