On the same day, Syria’s defense ministry accused Hezbollah of the recent kidnapping of three Syrian army soldiers, claiming they were taken into Lebanon and subsequently executed, an allegation that Hezbollah has denied.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, indicated that four additional Syrian army soldiers fell victim during clashes with tribal gunmen at the border, raising the Syrian death toll to eight during the recent hostilities.
Clashes along the Lebanon-Syria border have been recurrent since the new Syrian leadership took power in Damascus. In February, the Lebanese National News Agency reported that the Lebanese Army began retaliating with appropriate weaponry against fire coming from the Syrian side, issuing instructions to military units near the borders for adequate responses.
