Western and regional countries are eager to guide Syria toward stability in the wake of 14 years of civil conflict, which has resulted in millions of refugees fleeing the nation. However, recent violent outbreaks have undermined confidence in the newly-established Islamist-led authorities, marking the most severe unrest since Assad’s departure in December.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the necessity of an inclusive political process for a peaceful future in Syria. She confirmed that Berlin will contribute an additional 300 million euros for the United Nations and other organizations assisting Syrians domestically and in the surrounding region.
The EU’s annual donor drive, ongoing for eight years, has historically concentrated on providing support to refugees in neighboring nations while avoiding interactions with the Assad regime. This year’s conference aims to secure funds for the pressing humanitarian requirements of Syrians and those displaced throughout the region.
The situation in Syria is dire, with significant portions of the country devastated and the economy severely impacted by years of international sanctions following Assad’s crackdown on opposition in 2011. Currently, around 16.7 million people require humanitarian assistance, and the United Nations projects that it could take over 50 years for Syria’s economy to recover to its pre-war state.
