Sudan’s Omdurman has witnessed shelling by the RSF that killed six civilians, including two children. The attack also wounded 36 others, predominantly children. The conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army has intensified, leading to significant casualties and the displacement of millions.
On Monday, a medical source reported that six civilians, including two children, were killed due to shelling conducted by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Omdurman, a city adjacent to the capital, Khartoum. The attack occurred on Sunday, leaving 36 civilians wounded, with a significant proportion being children, as revealed by a doctor who spoke to AFP anonymously due to safety concerns. The Khartoum regional government confirmed that residential areas in northern Omdurman were targeted, affecting individuals within their homes and children in a nearby football field.
The conflict, which has persisted between the RSF and Sudan’s army since April 2023, has intensified across the capital this year. Following initial territorial losses, the army has recently regained some ground, asserting that its forces are now positioned less than a kilometer from the presidential palace—an area seized by the RSF at the onset of hostilities.
The ongoing war has resulted in catastrophic consequences, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing over 12 million individuals, thereby establishing it as the most significant displacement and hunger crisis globally. In Khartoum alone, approximately 3.5 million residents have been compelled to flee their homes.
Sudan remains starkly divided; the RSF has exerted control over a large portion of Darfur in the west and parts of the south, while the army retains authority in the north and east. Recent military progress in central Sudan and Khartoum has exacerbated the struggle for dominance in the capital.
The shelling in Omdurman on Sunday resulted in significant civilian casualties, including the loss of two children. This incident underscores the ongoing violence stemming from the conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s army, which has led to widespread human suffering and displacement. As military control shifts and tensions escalate, the ramifications continue to impact countless lives across Sudan.
