G7 Condemns Venezuela’s Naval Threats Against Guyana

The G7 has condemned Venezuela’s naval threats against Guyana, calling them unacceptable incursions into Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone. A joint statement reaffirms support for Guyana and urges Venezuela to cease aggressive actions while addressing political crises in Venezuela. The ICJ is currently adjudicating a longstanding border dispute between the nations.

The G7 nations have expressed strong condemnation of Venezuela’s naval threats against Guyana, regarding them as unacceptable incursions into Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and violations of its internationally recognized sovereign rights. Following a meeting in Quebec, Canada, the foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union reiterated their backing for Guyana while urging Venezuela to cease its aggressive actions.

Specifically, the G7 highlighted a March 1 incident where a Venezuelan naval vessel encroached near ExxonMobil’s oil production area within the Stabroek Block, stating, “Venezuelan naval vessels threatening Guyana’s commercial vessels is unacceptable and an infringement of Guyana’s internationally recognised sovereign rights.” The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.

Recent months have seen heightened tensions between Guyana and Venezuela, with Venezuela announcing plans to conduct elections on May 25, 2025, aimed at appointing a governor for Guyana’s Essequibo region. Guyana has vehemently objected to this initiative, viewing it as an illegal annexation attempt, and has sought intervention from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Venezuela from taking actions that affect Essequibo and its populace.

Additionally, the G7 has condemned Venezuela’s ongoing domestic political crisis, advocating for democratic restoration, the release of political prisoners, and the cessation of repression against peaceful protestors following the contentious elections held on July 28, 2024. As Guyana fortifies its diplomatic and legal remedies, regional and global observers remain vigilant regarding Venezuela’s behavior. The ICJ is currently addressing the long-standing border dispute and is anticipated to play a significant role in resolving the territorial issues.

The G7’s firm stance against Venezuela’s military threats signifies a collective commitment to upholding international law and the sovereignty of nations. Guyana’s legal and diplomatic efforts through the ICJ reflect its determination to safeguard its territorial integrity, while the G7’s call for political reform in Venezuela highlights the need for democratic principles in the region. The ongoing situation underscores the importance of international vigilance and cooperation in addressing territorial disputes and fostering regional stability.
