According to the latest Global Web Index (GWI) Report, television remains a critical component of media consumption worldwide, with notable differences in average daily screen time across various countries. The survey targeted internet users aged 16 to 64, revealing that while streaming services have grown significantly, traditional television still captures a considerable audience in many regions.

The report identifies the countries with the highest average daily TV screen time per user:

United States – 4.39 hours per day. Although recognized as a hub for digital content, traditional television retains a stronghold in the U.S. Viewing patterns have increasingly shifted toward on-demand services like Hulu and Netflix, merging “TV time” with overall screen time.

South Africa – 4.04 hours per day. This nation leads the Sub-Saharan region in TV screen time, with traditional broadcasts remaining popular. However, digital consumption is on the rise, particularly among younger audiences who prefer streaming services on mobile devices.

Brazil – 4.4 hours per day. Brazilian audiences demonstrate a robust appetite for entertainment, combining conventional TV viewing with streaming platforms. Cultural staples such as telenovelas coexist with services like Globoplay and Netflix, reflecting diverse viewing habits.

United Kingdom – 3.54 hours per day. In comparison to countries like the Philippines or Brazil, the UK’s average TV screen time is moderate due to a broader range of media consumption, including social media and mobile video content, indicating changing habits among viewers.

Chile – 3.43 hours per day. Chilean audiences continue to engage significantly with traditional television, especially for news and entertainment programs like telenovelas. Services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime are especially popular among younger, urban demographics, further diversifying viewing options.

The GWI Report highlights the continued importance of television in global media consumption, despite rapid growth in streaming services. Countries such as the United States, South Africa, and Brazil exhibit high daily screen times, illustrating a blend of traditional and modern viewing habits. The findings suggest that while streaming is becoming more prevalent, traditional television remains entrenched in consumer routines.
