Humanitarian Crisis Escalates in Khartoum Amid Ongoing Conflict

The conflict in Khartoum, Sudan, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Red Crescent workers recover bodies from a sewage pit amidst the war’s devastation. With 3.5 million fleeing and severe shortages of food and clean water, community kitchens provide essential support. The battle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo continues to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, leading to famine conditions in several displacement camps.

In Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, the horrid conditions depict the aftermath of prolonged warfare between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As Red Crescent workers attempt to recover bodies from an open sewage pit, the stench is overwhelming, highlighting the grim reality. Hisham Zein al-Abdeen, head of forensic medicine, reported that several victims were brutally shot or beaten before being discarded into the pit.

The conflict initiated in April 2023 has seen army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo on opposing sides, leading to immense devastation. War has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 12 million people, and left 3.5 million fleeing as Khartoum transforms into a site of ruin.

While the RSF once dominated city streets, the army’s recent territorial gains have led to closer proximity to the presidential palace, currently held by RSF troops. Daglo remains resolute, asserting that his forces will not abandon Khartoum, emphasizing ambitions to advance towards Port Sudan, which now functions as the operational capital.

An AFP team observed the stark remnants of neighborhoods in Bahri, where abandoned infrastructure and civilian distress are evident. Buildings are riddled with bullet holes, hospitals and schools are nonfunctional, and reports of mass graves have surfaced, intensifying the war’s psychological toll on the remaining civilians.

Amidst the chaos, survival has become a challenge due to shortages of electricity, clean water, and food. Women in Bahri are organized into community kitchens, providing sustenance amidst dire conditions. Nonetheless, the war has rendered normal transactions nearly impossible, complicating efforts to secure food and essential supplies.

The conflict has escalated into a humanitarian disaster, with famine conditions reported in three displacement camps. The United Nations notes that over 100,000 individuals in Khartoum face dire hunger situations, encapsulating the extensive damage wrought on Sudan’s infrastructure and the socioeconomic landscape, forcing millions closer to starvation.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has evolved into a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, marked by widespread displacement, severe food shortages, and rampant violence. As the army and RSF continue their brutal struggle over Khartoum, the humanitarian situation deteriorates further, with millions at risk of starvation amid collapsing infrastructure. The resilience of community support initiatives offers a glimmer of hope, even as challenges persist in providing essential resources.
