Iran Threatens Retaliation After US Strikes on Houthi Positions

Iran has threatened retaliation following US airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. Commander Salami stated the Houthis operate independently, while President Trump warned Iran of serious consequences for its support of the Houthis. Iran condemned the strikes, citing violations of international law and declared that the US has no right to dictate its foreign policy.

On Sunday, Commander Hossein Salami of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued a warning of retaliation against any attacks, following US airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. Salami emphasized that the Houthis independently determine their strategic and operational responses. This statement comes after US President Donald Trump mandated the Houthis to cease their aggressions or risk severe consequences.

In his warning, President Trump asserted that if Iran continues backing the Houthis, it would face full accountability from the United States. Following the strikes, Iran condemned the actions as “barbaric,” with reports indicating at least 31 casualties, including women and children, as stated by the Houthi-run Ministry of Health. Iranian officials also labeled the strikes as violations of international law and the United Nations Charter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi firmly resisted Trump’s demand for Iran to withdraw its support for the Houthis, declaring, “The US has no right to dictate Iran’s foreign policy” on the social media platform X. He urged for an end to the violence against Yemeni civilians.

Saturday’s airstrikes mark the first military action against the Houthis since Trump’s presidency began in January 2025. This military initiative targeted the Houthis, who are supported by Tehran and have a substantial presence in Yemen, including control over the capital, Sanaa. The airstrikes were a response to increased Houthi attacks on vessels linked to Israel, purportedly in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israeli-Gaza conflict, which has resulted in significant fatalities since October 2023.

In summary, tensions are escalating between the United States and Iran, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict involving the Houthis. President Trump’s threats of severe retaliation and Iran’s resolute stance against US interference in its foreign policy illustrate the complex geopolitical landscape. The situation remains precarious as military actions continue to escalate, potentially impacting regional stability and international relations.
