Local clothing and footwear sales in Amman are declining, attributed to reduced purchasing power, but traders expect improvements as Eid Al Fitr approaches. Preparations have been made for an increase in demand, with stable prices for seasonal goods. Despite current challenges, expectations remain optimistic for the holiday season.
In Amman, local clothing and footwear sales are currently facing challenges, as consumer purchasing power has declined compared to previous seasons, despite stable pricing. Traders anticipate a boost in sales during the upcoming Eid Al Fitr holidays as salaries are expected to be distributed soon, prompting increased shopping activity in the weeks ahead.
Asaad Qawasmeh, an importer, indicated that current demand remains below average, attributing this situation to the public’s diminished purchasing capability. He predicts that sales will rise during the final week of Ramadan, although he cautions that the season will be difficult for apparel vendors due to the necessity of discounting winter items while introducing new summer collections.
In the early months of this year, Jordan’s imports of ready-made clothing totaled JD45 million, alongside JD14 million in footwear, primarily sourced from China, Egypt, Turkey, Europe, the United States, and other West Asian countries. Munir Dayeh, an importer and wholesaler, remarked that the current commercial activity in clothing and footwear remains significantly limited compared to past holiday seasons.
Preparations for the upcoming holiday have been made, with importers and retailers ensuring that goods are present in stores at competitive prices. Ihab Qadri, from the Jordan Chamber of Industry, reflected that while market activity is deemed normal for this time of year, sector facilities are poised to meet anticipated demand adequately.
In summary, the local clothing and footwear market is currently experiencing a dip in sales driven by weakened consumer purchasing power. However, with the approaching Eid Al Fitr holidays, projections indicate a potential recovery in sales as salaries become available and shoppers take to the markets. Traders are adapting to seasonal transitions, though challenges remain for merchants trying to navigate discounting and inventory management.
