Nigerian Customs Service Seizes ₦22.9 Million in Illicit Fuel Smuggling Operation

The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit valued at ₦22.9 million in Adamawa State as part of Operation Whirlwind. The operation aims to combat fuel smuggling driven by economic disparities. The Customs Service seeks public cooperation in reporting smuggling activities while reinforcing its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.

In an ongoing effort to combat fuel smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through its Operation Whirlwind, has successfully intercepted 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Adamawa State, valued at ₦22.9 million. The operation was revealed during a press conference on March 14, 2025, and was executed in known smuggling areas including Maiha, Mubi, Gurin, and Belel. Each keg contained 25 litres, contributing to a total of 22,900 litres seized.

The Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs and National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Hussein Ejibunu, praised the operation’s intelligence-driven execution, highlighting NCS’s dedication to maintaining economic integrity and enforcing trade regulations. This operation is part of broader efforts following a significant seizure of 1,149 jerrycans of PMS, totaling approximately 34,470 litres, in Gembu, Taraba State, on March 13, 2025.

Ejibunu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating fuel smuggling, identifying economic disparities and quick profits as key motivators for traffickers. Under the guidance of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS aims to disrupt these networks, rendering fuel smuggling an unprofitable and dangerous venture.

In his remarks, Ejibunu also recognized the dedication of Operation Whirlwind officers stating, “I extend my profound appreciation to the officers and men of Operation Whirlwind for their courage, unyielding vigilance, and professional execution.” He urged citizens to remain alert and report suspicious activities, emphasizing collective effort in combating economic sabotage.

The Nigeria Customs Service continues to intensify its operations against fuel smuggling, with significant recent seizures highlighting its effectiveness. The commitment to dismantling illicit networks and preserving economic stability emphasizes the importance of public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities. Through these efforts, the NCS strives to maintain Nigeria’s economic integrity and security.
