President Nangolo Mbumba announced his decision not to extend his presidency to avoid confusion in Namibia. He emphasized the need for lawful leadership transitions, confirming that he would step down soon and be succeeded by Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Mbumba also addressed criticisms of female leaders, reinforcing that gender should not be a barrier in governance.
President Nangolo Mbumba has affirmed that he refrained from extending his presidential term to prevent any potential confusion in Namibia. During his address at the Olukonda Elcin Parish, Mbumba articulated, “You can’t stay longer if you have not been duly elected.” He emphasized the importance of legal procedures in ascension to power, stating that forcing one’s presidency instigates unnecessary conflict.
Mbumba announced that he would relinquish the presidency in four days, with Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as his successor, to be sworn in on Friday, 21 March. He countered criticism regarding female leadership by condemning outdated beliefs, asserting that gender should not deter leadership positions in a democratic society. He highlighted the existing female president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia as an example of capable women leaders.
The outgoing president reassured the public about the upcoming transition, stating, “You have already elected her [Nandi-Ndaitwah]. There will be no elections this year or next year.” He urged citizens to maintain peace during this transition period. Mbumba assumed the presidency in February last year following the passing of President Hage Geingob, previously clarifying that he intended to complete Geingob’s term only. He stressed, “I am not going to be around for the elections, so don’t panic.”
In conclusion, President Nangolo Mbumba has made clear his commitment to constitutional integrity by stepping down and facilitating the transition to President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. He urged national unity and asserted the necessity of lawful elections. Mbumba’s remarks highlight the importance of gender equality in leadership, advocating for societal acceptance of female leaders within Namibia’s democratic framework.
