The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay has reelected Rev. Alceu Alton Figur as president during its 43rd General Assembly. The assembly focused on the theme “Guided” from Romans 8:14. President Figur highlighted the challenges faced by the church and expressed gratitude for the support from God. The assembly also dedicated a new mission church in Loma Plata.
The 43rd General Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) convened from March 8-9 in Loma Plata, Chaco Paraguayo. During this assembly, Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected as president for another three-year term. The guiding theme of this year’s convention was “Guided,” reflecting on Romans 8:14.
In expressing his gratitude for the reelection, President Figur said, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour.” He emphasized reliance on divine guidance, referencing Psalm 121, stating, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth…”.
President Figur acknowledged the challenges faced by the church in contemporary society, citing the breakdown of family values, the devaluation of marriage, and attacks on Christian beliefs. Despite these challenges, he noted, “Our church has been greatly blessed by God: all our parishes are served by a pastor, and we are able to maintain our mission throughout the country.” He reaffirmed the commitment to lead God’s people under His grace and love, resonating with the convention’s theme.
First elected in 2022, President Figur serves as the pastor of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción and is also the Latin America regional representative on the International Lutheran Council’s board of directors. Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, the ILC’s General Secretary, expressed his support for President Figur’s reelection, wishing continued blessings on his service.
In addition to the presidential election, the assembly marked the formal dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata. This congregation is located 500 kilometers from President Figur’s home, and he visits biweekly to support its establishment. The IELP is a member of the International Lutheran Council, which comprises confessional Lutheran bodies committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ based on Holy Scripture and Lutheran Confessions.
The reelection of Rev. Alceu Alton Figur as president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay highlights the church’s commitment to its mission in a challenging socio-cultural landscape. Under his leadership, the church has shown resilience, maintaining pastoral service across its parishes while addressing pressing societal issues. This gathering also emphasized the church’s dedication to fellowship and community outreach, as demonstrated by the dedication of a new mission church.
