While Uzbekistan retains robust relations with Russia, it has not endorsed Moscow’s extensive military actions in Ukraine. Furthermore, the Uzbek government has cautioned its citizens against engaging in mercenary roles related to the conflict, warning of possible legal repercussions.
Despite Uzbekistan’s close economic ties with Russia, it has opted out of joining certain Moscow-led alliances like the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Previously, in 2017, Russia and Uzbekistan signed a defense cooperation agreement that encompassed arms supply, maintenance, military assistance, and initiatives for joint research and development.
