The UTM plans to construct a memorial pillar in honor of its late founder, Saulos Chilima, at Chikangawa. The announcement was made by National Campaign Director Maquenda Chunga during a rally in Mzuzu, where he also addressed allegations about the party’s involvement in the age limit bill. UTM leaders criticized the current administration’s failures and addressed unrest during recent demonstrations, emphasizing the need for political change.
The United Transformation Movement (UTM), led by its National Campaign Director Maquenda Chunga, has announced plans to erect a memorial pillar at the plane crash site in Chikangawa to honor the late Saulos Chilima. Chunga announced this during a massive rally at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu, stating that they are currently seeking permission from Chilima’s family to proceed with the construction.
“We as UTM are still and shall continue mourning the late Chilima who was the founder of the party. We are here as a party because of him and to honor him, we shall construct a memorial pillar at the scene of the accident in Chikangawa and I can confirm that we are talking with his family to give us a go ahead,” said Chunga. Furthermore, he addressed rumors claiming UTM’s involvement in the age limit bill, categorically denying any connection.
UTM President Dalitso Kabambe took the opportunity to express the party’s dissatisfaction with the current administration, indicating that President Lazarus Chakwera’s government has failed the citizens of Malawi due to widespread corruption and the increasing cost of living.
Additionally, UTM’s publicity secretary Felix Njawala condemned the recent unrest during peaceful vendor demonstrations in Mzuzu, criticizing police involvement and accusing them of acting as political instruments, which he believes led to the chaos.
UTM presidential advisor Mathews Mtumbuka criticized the Chakwera administration for failing to fulfill promises regarding regional development, including the construction of Mbelwa University, the Orton Chirwa International Airport, and improvements to the M1 road. He asserted that Kabambe would bring significant changes to the northern region if given the opportunity.
In her comments, Patricia Kaliati, an advisor to Kabambe, highlighted her disappointment concerning some senior UTM members who she claims distanced themselves from the party immediately after the passing of Saulos Chilima.
The UTM’s intention to build a memorial pillar for Saulos Chilima reflects the party’s commitment to honor its founder. The leadership’s criticism of the current government’s performance and the take on political incidents demonstrate their strategic focus as they prepare for future elections. The discussion of party unity amidst allegations of abandonment by senior members indicates an ongoing internal reflection and strategy development as UTM looks towards future endeavors.
