Al Shabaab Bombs Somalia’s President Mohamud’s Motorcade in Mogadishu

Al Shabaab militants targeted Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a bomb attack on his motorcade in Mogadishu. Fortunately, the President was unharmed. This marks the first direct attack on him since 2014. Eyewitnesses reported fatalities at the scene, while Al Shabaab confirmed the assault in a statement.

On a recent date, Al Shabaab militants conducted a bomb attack on the motorcade of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu. The group has claimed responsibility for this operation. Fortunately, both government and military officials reported that President Mohamud was unharmed during the assault. Presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein confirmed via X that the President was “good and well on his way to the front lines.”

Eyewitness reports from soldiers and local residents indicate that the President’s convoy was targeted during the attack. A journalist from Reuters observed that the incident resulted in the deaths of four individuals near the presidential palace. In a statement on their Telegram channel, Al Shabaab asserted that, “Our fighters targeted a convoy of vehicles carrying Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as they were leaving the presidential palace and heading to the airport.”

Al Shabaab has a history of conducting attacks in Somalia, aiming to overthrow the government. Notably, this attack represents the first direct assault on President Mohamud since 2014, when he was previously affected by a bombing at a hotel where he was speaking. Following this incident, state media aired images of President Mohamud in the Adan Yabal district of the Middle Shabelle region of Somalia, where government forces continue to confront a three-week-long offensive by Al Shabaab.

In summary, the attempted bombing of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s motorcade marks a significant escalation in Al Shabaab’s efforts to undermine the Somali government. Despite the attack’s severity, the President emerged unscathed, and combat operations against Al Shabaab persist in various regions. This incident underlines the ongoing security challenges faced by the Somali government.
