On 12 March, Cheng Yan, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, convened a meeting with Webster Shamu, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe. This significant meeting focused on promoting further exchanges and collaboration between the legislative bodies of both nations. Counselor Zhang Yi also attended the discussions.
During the meeting, Cheng Yan provided an overview of the recent sessions of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, emphasizing the implementation of whole-process people’s democracy in China. He noted the upcoming landmark event in 2025, which will mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe. Cheng expressed a desire for enhanced legislative cooperation, aiming to realize the mutual agreements established by the two heads of state and the outcomes of the recent Beijing summit related to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Webster Shamu expressed appreciation for the strong mutual trust and friendship shared between Zimbabwe and China. He assured Cheng Yan that the Parliament of Zimbabwe is committed to maintaining close relations with the National People’s Congress and will actively support initiatives that promote friendly cooperation across various sectors between the two nations.
