National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana Advocates for Strengthening Catholic Identity

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a call to enhance the Catholic identity in schools. The forum, hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua from March 10-15, resulted in recommendations for collaboration with religious groups, a five-year strategic plan for Catholic education, and increased emphasis on teaching Catholic doctrines and appointing chaplains.

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a call for leaders of Catholic educational institutions to enhance the Catholic identity within their schools. This forum took place from March 10 to 15, hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua under the theme, “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana.” The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) emphasized that education is a collaborative effort requiring clearly defined roles to ensure effective delivery of educational services throughout the nation.

In the aftermath of the forum, Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi from the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani proposed collaboration with significant stakeholders such as the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Office of the National Chief Imam, and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana. He urged a review of the draft Memorandum of Understanding to reflect the current context in managing Mission/Unit schools, advocating for its ratification by the government for the upcoming academic year of 2025/2026.

Furthermore, Bishop Gyamfi called for the establishment of a committee by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to formulate a five-year strategic framework for Catholic education by the end of July 2025. He highlighted the necessity to reinforce Catholic identity across educational levels, which includes teaching Catholic doctrines, constructing chapels, enhancing the presence of clergy and religious personnel, and assigning chaplains to schools.
