The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group will transition from Pick n Pay Namibia to the Model brand on July 1, following the termination of a 27-year franchise with PnP South Africa. The company aims to redefine the shopping experience for Namibians, emphasizing quality products and sustainability. The move represents a return to their original brand established in 1965.
The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group is set to replace Pick n Pay Namibia with the Model brand starting from July 1. This decision follows the termination of a 27-year franchise agreement with Pick n Pay (PnP) South Africa, effective June 30. O&L previously operated stores under the name ‘Model Supermarket’ before entering into this franchise agreement.
In a statement, O&L announced, “Model will officially replace Pick n Pay Namibia, setting the stage for a bold and inspiring shopping experience.” O&L executive chairman Sven Thieme emphasized the significance of returning to the Model brand, reflecting on the company’s roots established in 1965. He noted that this change represents more than just a name; it is a transformative evolution for Namibian shopping.
Model’s launch will occur nationwide on July 1, with an ongoing phased refurbishment to enhance the shopping experience. Graeme Mouton, managing director of Model, highlighted that the company aims to offer a grocery retail experience tailored to Namibian customers, emphasizing quality products and an engaging shopping atmosphere.
Mouton described Model as a movement, asserting its commitment to authenticity and passion, which are integral to the O&L identity. He urged Namibians to join in this promising venture as the company reclaims its retail future.
Historically, O&L, through WUM Properties, operated 19 Pick n Pay-branded stores in Namibia under a franchise. However, last year Thieme expressed that the decision to end the franchise was due to ongoing losses that rendered it unsustainable. He underscored the necessity of establishing a new business model to ensure a viable future for their employees amidst challenges faced by PnP in South Africa, including significant financial write-offs and mounting operating costs due to power supply issues.
The Ohlthaver & List Group’s transition from Pick n Pay to Model marks a significant shift in the retail landscape in Namibia. This change not only reflects a return to their original roots but also aims to deliver a unique shopping experience tailored to local preferences. The emphasis on sustainability is paramount, as the company seeks to ensure the welfare of its employees through a redefined business model. The launch on July 1 signals the beginning of a new chapter in Namibian retail, characterized by quality and authenticity.
