Dr. Rashid Yahaya Ssemddu, the Ugandan Ambassador to Sudan, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating, “I want to thank my brother, His Excellency, Ambassador Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, who has been here for this wonderful initiative…no wonder that is what we always enjoy as Ugandans, where we always live together regardless of our religious backgrounds.”
Dr. Ssemddu also commended the UAE for its ongoing charity efforts, noting, “Last year, I witnessed the generosity where His Excellency and the government of the United Arab Emirates gave out more than 10,000 packages to the needy people.” He affirmed that these charitable efforts would continue this year.
The event highlighted the strengthening relationship between Uganda and the UAE. Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, noted, “Our relationship with the UAE has developed from strength to strength. The UAE today is the biggest foreign inward investor in Uganda.” He shared ambitious projects, such as the proposed international airport in Kidepo and a nuclear power plant aimed at enhancing energy capacity.
Bishop Jackson Matovu from the Central Buganda diocese added a spiritual aspect, remarking on the joint experience of fasting during Ramadan and Lent. He stated, “We want to thank God who has united us…to share the meal together as God’s people.” He also emphasized the role of the Interreligious Council of Uganda in fostering collaboration among various faiths.
The interfaith Iftar served as an important reminder of the value of dialogue and cooperation among different religions and cultures.
