Ukraine Dismantles North Korean Artillery in Kursk Region

Ukrainian forces reported the destruction of three North Korean howitzers in the Kursk region. These artillery systems, camouflaged in a forest, were utilized by Russian troops. Ukrainian drone operators successfully targeted them, indicating ongoing fierce combat between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukrainian forces have successfully destroyed three North Korean howitzers located in the Kursk region, as reported by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command. The artillery, provided to Russian troops as military aid from North Korea, was found camouflaged in a forested area. To counteract the threat from FPV drones, Russian forces had implemented additional protective measures, known as ‘grills.’

Ukrainian drone operators identified the self-propelled howitzers and initiated an assault using high-explosive and cluster warheads from Ukrainian rocket artillery. This marks the second successful offensive against the M1978 Koksan systems during the current conflict. Just a month prior, operators from the 412th NEMESIS Regiment successfully targeted a similar system in the Luhansk region.

The M1978 Koksan, noted for its impressive range, features a 170-mm gun capable of reaching targets up to 60 kilometers away. Originally designed to threaten Seoul from the north of the demilitarized zone, these systems are now being employed by Russian forces to bolster their artillery capabilities due to significant losses. As of March 18, reports indicated that 76 combat engagements had occurred between Ukrainian and Russian forces, with fighting continuing on multiple fronts, particularly in the Kursk region.

In summary, the destruction of North Korean howitzers by Ukrainian forces underscores their ongoing military efforts in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The Ukrainian army’s strategic use of drone technology has proven effective, leading to significant strikes against advanced artillery systems. This incident highlights both the complexities of modern warfare and the adaptation of military technologies by both sides in the conflict.
