The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM) has announced its intention to assist in national development by creating a company to acquire equipment for municipalities. This comes as Mozambique faces social unrest due to disputed election results and rising living costs, with significant casualties reported during protests.
The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM) has committed to supporting national development initiatives. In a recent meeting in Maputo with President Daniel Chapo, ANAMM announced the establishment of a national development company aimed at acquiring equipment for shared use among municipalities. ANAMM President João Ferreira emphasized, “We are ready to help in the matter of serving everyone better and better.”
The proposed equipment aims to address the challenges faced in various districts that lie under the municipalities’ jurisdiction. Ferreira, who serves as the mayor of Chimoio, highlighted that this initiative would significantly bolster local governance.
Mozambique has been grappling with social unrest since October 2022, prompted by protests initiated by Venâncio Mondlane regarding disputed election results. Demonstrators are voicing concerns over the electoral process, the rising cost of living, and broader social issues, with smaller protests still occurring throughout the country.
Reports indicate that at least 327 individuals, including minors, have died amidst the unrest, with around 750 others reportedly injured. Decisive monitoring by the non-governmental organization Decide, which tracks electoral processes, has documented these tragic occurrences. The government has confirmed 80 fatalities alongside significant property damage, including the destruction of commercial establishments, schools, and health facilities.
In conclusion, the ANAMM’s commitment to national development through the establishment of a shared equipment company reflects a proactive approach to address municipal challenges. Despite ongoing social unrest and significant loss of life due to protests over electoral grievances, the ANAMM pledges to play a constructive role in fostering development and improving public services across Mozambique.
