The damaged pipeline is integral to the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System, capable of transporting significant oil quantities from the Amazon to the coast. Concerns regarding the environmental impact of the spill were echoed by marine biologist Eduardo Rebolledo, who noted that the affected rivers currently lack life forms due to the pollutants.
