Iran Rejects UN Human Rights Mechanisms, Critiques Hypocrisy of Western Nations

Iran’s representative at the UN Human Rights Council rejected a draft resolution for a fact-finding mission, warning of potential withdrawal from UN mechanisms. Criticisms were directed towards Germany and the UK for perceived hypocrisy, alongside a condemnation of US-led sanctions as violations of human rights. Iran denies the legitimacy of the proposed mission, portraying it as politically motivated.

During the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Iranian representative Bahreini expressed strong disapproval of a draft resolution aimed at establishing a fact-finding mission against Iran. He warned that should the resolution pass, Iran would reconsider its participation in UN human rights mechanisms. Bahreini labeled the initiative as hypocritical, particularly criticizing Germany and the UK for their contradictory human rights records.

Bahreini vehemently condemned these countries for their support of Israel during the current Palestinian crisis, asserting, “These countries, with their dark human rights histories, lack the moral authority to lecture others.” He also denounced the economic sanctions imposed by the United States and allied nations, claiming they violate the economic, social, and cultural rights of the Iranian populace.

The Iranian envoy dismissed the legitimacy of the proposed fact-finding mission, asserting that its reports are biased and derived from anti-Iranian terrorist groups. He emphasized that Iran does not recognize either the mandate of the Special Rapporteur or the fact-finding mission, categorizing them as instruments of political agendas rather than authentic human rights advocacy.

Bahreini concluded by reaffirming Iran’s commitment to multilateralism and human rights, underscoring that such principles are deeply embedded in its religious, historical, and cultural values.

In summary, Iran has firmly rejected the establishment of a UN fact-finding mission, with its representative condemning the initiative as hypocritical given the human rights records of the countries involved. The envoy criticized unilateral sanctions imposed by the US, contending that they infringe upon the rights of Iranian citizens. Additionally, Iran does not acknowledge the legitimacy of UN human rights mechanisms perceiving them as tools for political bias, all the while reaffirming its commitment to multilateral human rights rooted in its values.
