Moroccan Army Inspector General’s Visit to Saudi Arabia for Anti-Terrorism Talks

General Mohamed Berrid, Inspector General of the Moroccan Army, is visiting Saudi Arabia until March 21 to discuss anti-terrorism cooperation with the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition. Morocco, a member since 2015, had previously adjusted its participation due to tensions with Riyadh. This visit signals renewed commitments to collaborate on security matters.

General Mohamed Berrid, the Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) of Morocco, is currently visiting Saudi Arabia from March 16 to 21. This official visit includes a tour of the headquarters of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, founded in March 2015 under the leadership of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During his visit, discussions between the two parties focused on issues of mutual concern, particularly on enhancing cooperation to combat terrorism. The Coalition highlighted that these conversations exemplify the commitment to collective security measures.

Morocco has been a member of this military alliance since 2015, contributing FAR aircraft in operations against the Houthis in Yemen. However, relations experienced strain which led Morocco to “adjust its participation,” as noted by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in an earlier interview.

The visit by General Berrid indicates a renewed commitment to dialogue and cooperation on security matters, reflecting the directives of King Mohammed VI. The ongoing discussions aim to strengthen ties and operational coordination against shared threats.

General Mohamed Berrid’s visit to Saudi Arabia marks a significant step in reinforcing Morocco’s commitment to the Islamic Coalition Against Terrorism. The emphasis on discussions surrounding enhanced cooperation reflects the importance of collective security efforts amidst regional challenges. Despite past adjustments in Morocco’s participation, the ongoing engagement underscores a potential revitalization of military collaboration between Morocco and Saudi Arabia.
