Protests Erupt Among Renamo Dissidents Demanding Leadership Change

Renamo dissidents have demanded the resignation of party leader Ossufo Momade, blaming him for the party’s poor electoral performance. Protests included closing the provincial delegation in Chimoio and burning leaflets. Former guerrilla leaders, especially Fernando Mafenhure, have criticized Momade’s leadership, citing a decline in party popularity and alleged complicity with the ruling Frelimo Party.

Dissidents from the Renamo movement in Mozambique have launched protests demanding the resignation of Ossufo Momade, the party leader. The demonstrations took place in Chimoio, where former guerrilla fighters utilized chains and padlocks to shut down the Renamo provincial delegation, alongside burning leaflets featuring Momade’s image. They attribute Renamo’s disappointing performance in the general elections on October 9, 2022, to his leadership.

Renamo brigadier Fernando Mafenhure, serving as the spokesperson for the protesters, contended that Momade has exhausted his contributions to the party and should resign to allow for new leadership. Mafenhure emphasized that while they do not harbor ill will towards Momade, there is a prevalent sentiment among former guerrillas that his departure is necessary for the party’s progress and revitalization.

Further criticism from Mafenhure highlighted Momade’s lack of dynamism and leadership skills, claiming that Renamo’s popularity and effectiveness have declined since he assumed leadership in 2019. He expressed a longing for the late Afonso Dhlakama, Renamo’s former leader, who he believes better represented the values and struggles of the party’s fighters.

Mafenhure voiced concerns regarding an alleged alliance formed by Momade with the ruling Frelimo Party during the recent elections. He accused Momade of complicity in Frelimo’s fraudulent victory and criticized his silence on such matters, claiming that under Dhlakama’s leadership, there would have been a swift response to perceived betrayals.

In reaction to the dissatisfaction with Momade’s leadership, the protesters vowed to escalate their actions by closing all district delegations unless a new leader is appointed. They assert the need for a leadership change to restore Renamo’s spirit and direction. As the protests continue to unfold, attention is drawn towards Momade’s health, as he reportedly receives medical treatment outside the country, complicating the party’s organizational challenges further.

The protests led by Renamo dissidents reflect a growing dissatisfaction with Ossufo Momade’s leadership amidst concerns over the party’s performance in elections and perceived alliances with the ruling party. Former guerrilla fighters are calling for his resignation, demanding new leadership to better represent their interests and revitalize the political movement. With escalating actions planned, the future of Renamo’s leadership remains uncertain, especially as Momade battles health issues.
