The World Council of Churches (WCC) has announced a transition regarding its representation in Colombia, collaborating with the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Roman Catholic Church in the ongoing peace dialogue with the Colombian government and FARC-EP.
Jenny Neme Neiva, affiliated with the Christian Mennonite Church, has been appointed as the WCC’s deputy special envoy. Residing in Colombia, Neiva is already recognized by key stakeholders and will represent the WCC at peace dialogue meetings, leveraging her extensive experience in Colombian peacebuilding.
Dr. Humberto Shikiya, who has served as the WCC’s special envoy, will now assume the role of senior advisor for peacebuilding in Colombia. He will provide support to Neiva in her essential responsibilities. Shikiya emphasized Neiva’s experience, stating that her role as a female leader committed to gender justice will enrich the peace dialogue.
Dr. Fernando Enns has been appointed as the WCC’s special envoy, aiming to integrate the WCC’s commitment to the Colombian peace process into its governance. Although not based in Colombia, Enns will visit periodically to offer strategic guidance.
This transition occurs amid a humanitarian crisis in Catatumbo, highlighting the WCC’s unwavering mission. Peter Prove, Director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, affirmed the organization’s commitment to advocating for a just and sustainable peace in Colombia.
The WCC team is scheduled to engage in meetings in Colombia from March 17 to 21, including discussions with government and UN officials and collaboration with DiPaz and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission.
