On March 19, 2023, Abhishek Kaushik, President of the Amateur Soft Tennis Association of Uttar Pradesh, addressed the visa denial for the Pakistan and Bangladesh teams prior to the second India International Soft Tennis Championship (ISTC) and the inaugural South Asian Soft Tennis Championship. He expressed that the decision rests with the Indian government, stating, “Many incidents are taking place in Pakistan and Bangladesh. We don’t support terrorism, and sports can’t be together.”
The ISTC and South Asian Soft Tennis Championship are scheduled from March 17 to 22, 2025, at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida. The events have attracted approximately 150 athletes from twelve countries, including Iran, Japan, and Thailand, whilst Pakistan and Bangladesh are notable absentees due to the visa situation. Kaushik remarked, “This is a decision of the Government, and we welcome it.”
Kaushik reflected on India’s past success in the ISTC, noting their previous victory and expressing confidence in achieving similar outcomes in the upcoming tournaments. He reiterated that India is aiming for another medal after winning the last edition, as well as highlighting a future World Championship in Korea.
Highlighting the successful organization of the current championships, he stated that 15 countries were invited, with participants from Hungary, Chile, and Japan among others. He also underscored the efforts of the authorities in facilitating the event, noting, “All the overseas players from different parts of the world are pleased. All the facilities are there, and authorities have greatly helped us.”
Furthermore, Kaushik commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his impactful support of sports in India, crediting him with fostering enthusiasm among athletes through initiatives like the Fit India movement and personal interactions with competitors before and after events. He concluded by stating, “When our PM stands shoulder to shoulder with players, the excitement among players and federations will rise.”
