Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents a significant transformation in multiple sectors, influencing industries and daily life. Botswana must strategically embrace AI to harness its potential for societal and economic advancement. Implementation of AI can create new industries, foster innovation, and offer numerous opportunities if approached with foresight and responsibility.
In a collaboration with Mmegi, Botswana’s leading media organization, I, Siphiwe Mabusela, alongside my enterprise Stratida, aim to make AI accessible to a broader audience. This partnership goes beyond awareness; it focuses on mobilizing resources and strategies to ensure AI serves as an instrument of progress rather than disruption.
The rapid advancement of AI presents various challenges, particularly concerning unemployment and job displacement. If Botswana does not invest in AI-driven skill development and job creation, the nation may witness increased unemployment. Instead of resistance, there is a need to leverage AI to generate employment opportunities and new industries.
While AI tools can improve educational techniques, their misuse may impair students’ critical thinking. It is vital for AI not to render students passive recipients of knowledge. Tools like NzuluAI, which I developed, enhance research and creative problem-solving rather than promote shortcuts in education.
Beyond the realms of chatbots, AI has extensive applications in machine learning, automation, and robotics across various sectors. Examples include: 1) AI-powered precision farming to boost agricultural yield. 2) AI robotics in mining for improved safety. 3) AI diagnostic tools in healthcare for fast and accurate disease detection. 4) Customized education through AI-driven learning platforms. 5) Business automation via AI-enhanced analytics and fraud detection.
