Escalating Violence Against Civilians in Khartoum: UN Human Rights Office Reports

The UN Human Rights Office reports increasing violence against civilians in Khartoum, especially since March 12, resulting in numerous fatalities. The RSF and SAF are accused of serious human rights violations, including looting, arbitrary detentions, and sexual violence, necessitating urgent protective measures from all parties involved.

The UN Human Rights Office has expressed grave concerns regarding the escalating violence against civilians in Khartoum, particularly since the onset of hostilities on March 12. Reports indicate that numerous civilians, including humanitarian volunteers, have succumbed to artillery strikes and aerial bombardments conducted by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in regions such as eastern Khartoum and North Omdurman.

Recent credible assessments reveal that the RSF and its allied militias have perpetrated home invasions in eastern Khartoum, resulting in summary executions and arbitrary detentions. Furthermore, they have looted vital resources, plundering food and medical supplies from community kitchens and healthcare facilities. Allegations of sexual violence have also emerged from neighborhoods like Al Giraif Gharb.

In addition, the SAF and their associated fighters have reportedly engaged in rampant looting and other criminal activities within their controlled territories in Khartoum North (Bahri) and East Nile, whereby widespread arbitrary arrests are being conducted. In light of this escalating crisis, the UN has reiterated its appeal to both factions, as well as influential external stakeholders, to take decisive measures aimed at protecting civilians and halting the ongoing lawlessness and impunity.

The situation in Khartoum remains dire as violence against civilians worsens amidst military confrontations. The UN Human Rights Office has called for urgent actions from both parties involved and pertinent states to ensure the safety of civilians and put an end to the rampant lawlessness. Continued reports of atrocities highlight the critical need for international intervention and accountability.
