Female Diplomats Commend Ethiopia’s Efforts to Empower Women

Female diplomats applauded Ethiopia’s efforts during the 2025 Safaricom Women First 5km event, emphasizing the importance of women’s active participation and education in development. Key remarks highlighted the need for self-belief among women and the benefits of government initiatives to enhance women’s rights and empowerment.

Female diplomats and representatives from United Nations agencies praised Ethiopia’s innovative laws aimed at enhancing women’s empowerment during an event commemorating International Women’s Day. This celebration, marked by the 2025 Safaricom Women First 5km run in Addis Ababa, highlighted the significance of inclusive development that actively involves women at every level.

Margaret Atieno, Deputy Representative of UNHCR in Ethiopia, underscored the crucial role of education in enabling women to seize opportunities. Meanwhile, EU Ambassador Sofie From-Emmesberger recognized the government’s dedication to various initiatives focused on empowering women, stressing that these efforts should foster broader societal benefits. She also noted the necessity for women to engage actively in the transformation process.

Mariko Kagoshima, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Ethiopia, commended governmental strides towards enhancing citizens’ capacities. Kagoshima reiterated the importance of women believing in their potential, as self-confidence is instrumental in reaching their aspirations. She pointed out that while external assistance is beneficial, intrinsic belief in one’s abilities is equally vital.

Vanessa Prinz, a diplomat from the German Embassy, highlighted the initiatives the Ethiopian government has designed to support women’s rights. Prinz emphasized that a combination of self-empowerment and external support is essential for the successful advancement of women. She expressed confidence that the challenges women face will be addressed effectively.
