Interregional Economic Cooperation Highlighted at International Conference in Ashgabat

The International Conference in Ashgabat focused on the significance of interregional economic cooperation for sustainable development. On March 19, 2025, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan hosted the International Conference titled “International Year of Peace and Trust: the Role of Interregional Economic Cooperation in Ensuring Sustainable Development.” This event attracted numerous guests from around the globe to Ashgabat, reflecting the growing importance of interregional collaboration.

The conference comprised attendees from various sectors, including members of the Government, heads of ministries, representatives of international organizations, financial institutions, private sector leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, and Europe, as well as media representatives and rectors from Turkmen universities.

The event commenced with the reading of a congratulatory message from the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Subsequently, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, was invited to address the assembly. He emphasized that a foundation of peace, trust, equality, and mutual benefit is essential for successful economic collaborations.

Hero-Arkadag further elaborated on the need for global thinking and cooperation, underscoring the responsibility of leading international institutions to support a fair geo-economy. He highlighted the importance of diversifying energy resources, transport corridors, and infrastructure, pointing to Central and South Asia as prime examples of potential economic growth through cooperative initiatives.

Berdimuhamedov elaborated on the significance of energy and transport projects that connect Central and South Asia, focusing on their role in creating new industrial and technological corridors. He concluded his speech by wishing all participants a productive conference.

The conference proceeded to thematic sessions covering topics such as the geopolitical importance of energy projects, the economic implications of the Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan gas pipeline, and the development of transport connectivity in Central and South Asia. These discussions highlighted current cooperation scenarios and future prospects in multiple sectors, including energy and agriculture.

The participants also emphasized Turkmenistan’s central role in fostering interregional economic cooperation, citing major projects like the Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan – India gas pipeline as benchmarks for successful collaboration. There was a consensus on the need to enhance trade, investment, and industrial cooperation within the region, once traversed by the Great Silk Road.

As a culmination of the conference, the Final Document was adopted, and the participants issued an Address to President Berdimuhamedov. Additionally, foreign guests engaged in several bilateral meetings with their Turkmen counterparts throughout the day.
