According to the recent World Happiness Report, Malaysia is ranked fifth in the ASEAN region and 64th globally. Notably, Malaysians reportedly share approximately 11 meals per week with family and friends, highlighting a strong community bond. Singapore tops the ASEAN ranking at 34th position globally, followed by Vietnam at 46th, and Thailand at 49th. Other ASEAN countries include Indonesia at 83rd, Laos at 93rd, Cambodia at 124th, and Myanmar at 126th, while Brunei was not included in the survey.
Finland continues to lead the global happiness rankings for the eighth consecutive year, scoring 7.736 on the Life Evaluation Index. Denmark and Iceland follow in second and third places respectively. In contrast, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan rank as the least happy countries, occupying positions 141st, 142nd, and 143rd, respectively. Meanwhile, Palestine, affected by conflict, is ranked 108th, above other nations such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Egypt, with residents reporting an average happiness score of 4.7 out of 10.
In a statement regarding the findings, Gallup CEO Jon Clifton emphasized the importance of connection and community in achieving happiness, stating, “happiness is not just about wealth or growth, but about trust, connection, and knowing that people have your back.” He remarked that the report reveals a significant underestimation of global kindness and advocates for investing in relationships for healthier communities and economies. The World Happiness Report, associated with the UN’s International Day of Happiness, involves collaboration between Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the Editorial Board.
