Michael Olunga’s Message to Kenyans Before Harambee Stars Return to Nyayo Stadium

Michael Olunga calls upon Kenyans to support the Harambee Stars as they return to Nyayo National Stadium for their first competitive home match in four years against Gabon on March 23, 2025. His gratitude extends to the government for renovating the stadium to CAF standards, marking a significant milestone in the revival of local football activities.

Michael Olunga, the captain of the Harambee Stars, has conveyed an important message to the people of Kenya as the team prepares to play its first home match in over three years at Nyayo National Stadium. The last home competitive match was on November 15, 2021, against Rwanda during a World Cup qualifying event. Due to the lack of a CAF-approved stadium, Kenya had been compelled to host matches abroad since then.

Nyayo Stadium has recently undergone renovations and has been deemed fit by CAF, allowing the team to host its 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Gabon on March 23, 2025. Olunga is encouraging fans to attend in large numbers to provide the crucial support needed as the team aims to secure a place in the World Cup finals.

In an interview with FKF Media, Olunga stated, “I urge our fans and Kenyans at large to turn up in large numbers on Sunday and give us the 12th-man support that we need and have been missing. Kenyans love football and we are looking forward to meeting them on Sunday.”

He expressed great enthusiasm for the resumption of international football in Kenya, noting, “We will play our first competitive international match at home in four years and that will really be good.”

Olunga recognized the government’s efforts in ensuring Nyayo Stadium met CAF standards, expressing his gratitude, “I want to thank the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Sports for ensuring that we have Nyayo Stadium ready for international matches.”

Moreover, upgrades are also being made at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, which is nearing completion, as well as at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Renovations are ongoing at Police Sacco Stadium, Kirigiti Stadium, and Kasarani Annex, and a new facility, Talanta Sports City, is currently 40% complete.

In conclusion, Michael Olunga’s appeal for fan support highlights the significance of Kenya’s return to international football at home. The improvements at Nyayo Stadium and other sports facilities underline the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure. As the Harambee Stars prepare for their upcoming match against Gabon, the support of the Kenyan public will be crucial in rallying the team’s efforts for a successful qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
