Mozambique and Zambia have signed a memorandum to interconnect their energy systems, enhancing electricity supply in the SADC. On Wednesday, Mozambique and Zambia formalized an agreement to interconnect their energy systems, enhancing electricity supply within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This significant initiative will be implemented by the Mozambican state-owned electricity company, EDM, in conjunction with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO). The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by António Manda, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, and Makoze Chikote, the Zambian Minister of Energy.
The estimated investment required for this project is approximately $411.5 million. Its dual objectives are to boost energy supply capacity and to fortify Mozambique’s role in the regional energy sector. This interconnection will facilitate energy exchange and promote trade among SADC member states, ultimately generating increased revenue for Mozambique.
The document states that the initiative will establish a framework for the development of the Energy Systems Interconnection Project, featuring a 400 kV power transmission line going approximately 376 kilometers from the Matambo Substation in Mozambique to the Chipata West Substation in Zambia. Joaquim Ou-chim, the chairperson of EDM, attended the signing ceremony and expressed that this marks the transition of the project from planning to execution.
He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in the modern global energy landscape, declaring that, “In the current global energy scenario, regional cooperation is no longer an option but a necessity. As Africa moves towards greater energy integration, projects like this pave the way for a more connected and self-sufficient continent.”
