Escalating Conflict in Sudan: SAF Advances Towards Republican Palace Amidst Civilian Casualties

The Sudanese Armed Forces are advancing towards the Republican Palace amidst intensified battles against the RSF, with escalating civilian casualties and humanitarian issues reported. Military actions include airstrikes and ground assaults, while recent reports suggest significant destruction and displacement in North Darfur and North Kordofan.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are intensifying their offensive in Khartoum, having advanced to within 500 meters of the Republican Palace as they engage in fierce battles against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This escalation comes after the RSF took control of the palace nearly two years ago. The fighting is further compounded by additional clashes in North Darfur and North Kordofan, with civilian casualties increasing substantially.

Military sources report that the SAF has successfully destroyed an RSF convoy of 30 vehicles during its advance. The aim of this operation is to retake Greater Khartoum, which was lost to the RSF in the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023. Reports depict chaotic scenes in the city, highlighted by intense explosions and gunfire as SAF troops consolidate their position.

Civilians are tragically ensnared in this violence, with a local emergency group confirming 50 deaths and 82 detentions attributed to the RSF and allied militias in Khartoum. Humanitarian efforts are being hindered, with reports of volunteers facing threats, including killings and torture. Resistance committees disclose that five women were reportedly killed in a drone strike while the area remains blockaded by RSF forces.

In North Darfur, the SAF claims a successful airstrike targeting an RSF commander and associated fighters, while drone operations also target RSF supply lines. The conflict resulted in shelling that impacted homes and schools in the city of El Fasher. Additionally, a Yale University report indicates that the RSF has burned down at least 18 villages, leading to the displacement of civilians and destruction of local livelihoods.

In North Kordofan, a fragile calm has returned to El Obeid after prolonged bombardment by the RSF. However, El Fula in West Kordofan is experiencing a significant influx of displaced individuals, exacerbating already dire humanitarian conditions due to inadequate aid available to those affected.

The situation in Sudan remains dire as the SAF escalates its military campaign to reclaim territory from the RSF, particularly approaching key landmarks such as the Republican Palace. Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, facing significant casualties and obstructions to humanitarian assistance. Reports of village burnings highlight the widespread devastation caused by the conflict, illustrating an urgent need for solutions to address both the violence and humanitarian crisis affecting the populace.
