The Parliament of Uganda has endorsed the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to South Sudan, following a motion presented by Hon. Jacob Oboth, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs. This session took place under the leadership of Speaker Anita Among on March 20, 2025.
The call for military support arose after civil unrest erupted in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State earlier in March, prompting President Salva Kiir to reach out to President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for assistance. On March 10, Kiir formally requested urgent aid to help avert a potential security disaster, as outlined in a prior Memorandum of Understanding between the nations.
In response, President Museveni authorized the UPDF’s deployment for a peace enforcement mission, a decision rooted in the constitutional mandate and the UPDF Act. Minister Oboth noted that this action reflects Uganda’s commitments to patriotism, nationalism, and Pan-African principles. He emphasized its intent to foster regional solidarity based on historical ties.
Oboth further explained that the deteriorating security situation in South Sudan poses threats not only to that country but also potentially impacts Uganda’s security, economy, and political stability. He highlighted that the UPDF’s past interventions have contributed positively to peace and safety in the region, asserting that such efforts benefit the broader African context.
Hon. Gilbert Olanya from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supported the motion and urged fellow lawmakers to back the UPDF’s deployment. He argued that it is essential for maintaining peace for the people of Northern Uganda and for those engaged in business in South Sudan, underscoring the interlinked nature of stability in both countries.
The approval of the UPDF deployment to South Sudan by the Ugandan Parliament represents a significant step in regional security cooperation.
