Sudanese Army Intensifies Operations in Khartoum Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Sudanese army has escalated operations in Al-Jazira state, nearing full control of the presidential palace in Khartoum. Reports indicate significant clashes and a military push against RSF forces. The situation in North Darfur is dire, with thousands displaced and facing famine. Over 12 million people have fled their homes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.

On Thursday, the Sudanese army, along with the elite unit of the General Intelligence Service, intensified operations in southwestern Al-Jazira state, advancing towards the full control of the presidential palace in Khartoum. Al-Arabiya reports that this military push targets ten crucial areas south of Khartoum where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) remain active, highlighting potential significant shifts in the battle as various military units prepare to advance on the capital.

Following a nighttime offensive, intense clashes erupted in central Khartoum around the presidential palace. According to state-run Sudan TV, the military is approaching complete control of the palace amidst a two-year conflict that threatens to fragment Sudan. The RSF has made efforts to breach the military’s siege in central Khartoum, launching repeated attacks from the southeastern axis, though these assaults have been repelled.

A senior military source revealed that airstrikes conducted by the military successfully ambushed RSF fighters, destroying numerous combat units. In total, approximately 30 RSF military vehicles have been obliterated, and vital access routes to the presidential palace have been secured. Meanwhile, in North Darfur, clashes in the vicinity of El Fasher have prompted thousands to seek refuge at Zamzam camp, which is currently under siege and suffering from famine due to restricted humanitarian aid.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 12 million individuals since the war commenced in April 2023. The resulting humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by famine, disease outbreaks, and significant damage to vital infrastructure, necessitating immediate action. The UN and humanitarian organizations have urged an urgent cessation of hostilities to allow for unhindered access to life-saving aid for affected populations.

The Sudanese army’s intensified operations in Khartoum mark a critical phase in the ongoing conflict, targeting key areas and aiming for comprehensive control over the presidential palace. The ongoing clashes have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and leaving many without essential aid. The international community must act swiftly to address the dire situation faced by the displaced and affected populations.
