Strengthening Bolivia-China Relations: A Meeting of Commitment and Cooperation

On February 18, 2025, Wang Yi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, met with Bolivian Foreign Minister Celinda Sosa Lunda at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Wang highlighted the significant meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Luis Arce in November, which fostered mutual trust and guided the future of bilateral relations. With this year marking both the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and Bolivia’s 200th anniversary of independence, China is dedicated to enhancing cooperation with Bolivia to elevate their strategic partnership and support Chinese investments in Bolivia for its development and improved livelihoods.

Wang Yi also congratulated Bolivia on its new status as a BRICS partner country and expressed China’s support for Bolivia’s increased role in global and regional matters. He emphasized that Latin America should not be considered the backyard of any country but rather a sovereign region. China advocates for the sovereignty and dignity of Latin American nations, reaffirming its role as a reliable friend and partner to the region. Furthermore, this year celebrates the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC Forum, with China eager to collaborate with Bolivia to prepare for the upcoming meeting and explore future cooperation plans.

Minister Sosa echoed sentiments of camaraderie between Bolivia and China, emphasizing successful cooperation in various sectors such as economy, trade, and technology following the recent leaders’ meeting. She acknowledged the significant potential in Bolivia-China relations and welcomed increased Chinese investment to ensure mutual benefits. Sosa expressed gratitude for China’s support in enhancing Bolivia’s independent development and boosting its international stature, while reiterating Bolivia’s commitment to prioritizing its ties with China and adhering to the one-China principle. As both nations are part of the Global South, Bolivia is enthusiastic about deepening cooperation with China under BRICS and the China-CELAC Forum.
