Vice President Jeremiah Koung has endorsed Samuel Kogar of the MDR for the Nimba County by-election on April 22, 2025, following the death of Senator Prince Johnson. Koung stressed Kogar’s qualifications while calling for unity among the Mah and Dan people.
In a significant political development, Vice President Jeremiah Koung has officially endorsed Samuel Kogar, the candidate from the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), for the upcoming by-election in Nimba County set for April 22, 2025. This election seeks to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Prince Johnson, a prominent figure in Nimba County, who passed away in November 2024.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) recently announced eight preliminary candidates for the election. During a simulcast telephone call, Koung, a member of the ruling Unity Party, expressed his firm belief that Kogar has the requisite qualities to succeed Johnson. He emphasized his exclusion of other candidates, stating, “I will support Mack Gblinwon, the candidate of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) in a different election but not this one. I believe Kogar has all it takes to replace the late Johnson.”
Additionally, Koung appealed to the Mah people of Nimba, urging them to allow the Dan people to participate in this election. He stated, “I am begging the Mah people! I think the Mah people should leave this election for the Dan people since we already have a Mah Senator. Let’s keep the balance to make the County stable. Let’s keep our county together and it will be in our interest.” This call highlights the importance of inclusivity and stability in the county’s political landscape.
Koung’s endorsement of Kogar resolves any previous ambiguity regarding his support, particularly noting that he refrained from endorsing a candidate during last year’s by-election when he ascended to the vice presidency after Nyan Twanyen took his place as senator.
Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s endorsement of Samuel Kogar marks a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the upcoming Nimba County by-election, reinforcing Kogar’s position as a viable successor to the late Senator Prince Johnson. Koung’s appeal for unity among the Mah and Dan people reflects an intention to maintain stability in the county. This endorsement clarifies Koung’s political stance after previous caution in expressing support for candidates during prior elections.
