Nigeria Alleviates Petrol Crisis in Niger Republic Through Supply Assistance

Niger Republic’s petrol crisis is easing as Nigeria supplies fuel, decreasing pump prices from N10,000 to N5,000 per liter. This assistance follows negotiations between Niger’s military junta and Nigerian officials. Residents express gratitude for the support, marking a positive shift in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The recent petrol crisis in Niger Republic has seen a reprieve due to the supply of petrol from Nigeria, as reported by The PUNCH. Residents of border areas and security sources have confirmed the influx of numerous petrol tankers transporting fuel from Nigeria to Niger, ultimately leading to a decrease in pump prices.

On March 16, 2025, it was revealed that Niger had requested assistance from Nigeria after experiencing a significant fuel shortage. The West African nation reached out despite prior diplomatic tensions. A delegation from Niger’s military junta traveled to Abuja for negotiations, resulting in the approval of 300 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) for export to Niger.

A senior official noted that the fuel supply agreement was intended as a “strategic bargaining tool” in negotiations surrounding Niger’s re-engagement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The official expressed confidence that Niger would gradually resume its relationship with ECOWAS due to its precarious resource situation.

Reports indicate that petrol prices in Niger have dropped from about N10,000 per liter to around N5,000 following the arrival of the tankers. Although there are still queues at gas stations, the situation has significantly improved in the past few days, as confirmed by a resident of Agadez, Faruku Lawali. He praised the Nigerian government’s timely assistance during the crisis.

Commercial bus driver Usman Aliyu echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the notable reduction in fuel costs from approximately N10,000 to about 2,000 CFA (approximately N4,000). His remarks emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s support during this challenging time, revealing a strengthening bond between the neighboring countries.

Security personnel at the Nigerian border in Illela verified the transfer of fuel tankers, explaining that the movements were part of a formal agreement with necessary documentation. This collaboration reflects an important step towards stabilizing the fuel situation in Niger Republic and restoring normalcy in fuel supply.

In conclusion, the petrol crisis in Niger Republic is alleviating thanks to the support from Nigeria, as evidenced by the influx of petrol tankers. This assistance has resulted in a significant reduction in petrol prices and improved access for residents. The diplomatic efforts between the two nations showcase a commitment to regional cooperation, critical for Niger’s socio-economic stability.
