Egypt Condemns Israel’s Agency for Displacing Gaza Population

Egypt has condemned Israel’s new agency aimed at displacing Palestinians from Gaza and criticized the approval of new West Bank settlements. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that the so-called “voluntary departure” is unjustified and illegal under international law. The ministry called for international intervention to uphold Palestinian rights and sovereignty amid escalating conflict and humanitarian crises in the region.

On March 25, 2023, Egypt condemned Israel’s establishment of an agency intended to facilitate the displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. The condemnatory statement issued by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry criticized the approval of 13 new settlements in the West Bank, categorizing the initiative as unjustifiable.

The Egyptian government expressed that Israel’s notion of “voluntary departure” fails to have any legitimate ground. It pointed out the unjust conditions under which the Palestinian population faces bombardment, starvation, and a denial of humanitarian aid, equating these actions to forced displacement and a breach of international law.

Cairo urged the international community and the United Nations Security Council to respond firmly to these alleged violations by Israel. The statement reiterated support for Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a related development, Israel’s Defence Ministry announced the creation of a new directorate tasked with overseeing the “voluntary relocation” of Palestinians in Gaza who may wish to relocate to third countries. However, no specific third countries have been identified yet, nor confirmed to accept potential refugees.

This announcement follows a resumption of Israeli military activities in Gaza, which has intensified the humanitarian crisis and led to further displacements among the Palestinian population. This move comes after a two-month ceasefire, marking a significant increase in conflict in the region.

Egypt’s condemnation of Israel’s actions highlights the ongoing tensions regarding the displacement of Palestinians and the settlement expansions in the West Bank. The international community is urged to take a stand against these violations of international law, emphasizing the need for a resolution that recognizes Palestinian rights. The situation continues to escalate, complicating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
