Sudanese Army Air Strike in Darfur Market Results in Hundreds of Deaths

A Sudanese war monitor reported that the Sudanese army conducted an indiscriminate air strike on a market in North Darfur, killing hundreds and injuring many. Communication issues hinder independent verification of the situation. The RSF accused the army of a massacre, and the conflict has led to vast humanitarian crises, with significant fatalities and large displacements in the region.

On March 25, 2025, a Sudanese war monitor reported that the Sudanese army conducted an air strike on Tora market in North Darfur, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and causing serious injuries to many others. The Emergency Lawyers group, an organization composed of volunteer legal professionals, claimed that this air strike was indiscriminate, although they did not specify the exact timing of the attack.

Due to a telecommunications blackout in Darfur, independent verification of the reported casualties was not possible. The Sudanese army has been engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, but did not provide any comment in response to requests regarding the incident. The RSF accused the army of committing a “massacre” on the day prior to the report.

The ongoing war in Sudan has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and has displaced over 12 million people, leading to one of the most severe hunger and displacement crises in the world. The western region of Darfur has been particularly affected, facing extreme violence characterized by the use of barrel bombs, attacks on famine-stricken displacement camps, and widespread ethnic violence.

While the RSF has utilized advanced drones in the region, the Sudanese army maintains aerial superiority through the use of warplanes, frequently targeting RSF positions throughout Darfur.

The recent air strike in North Darfur highlights the severe humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has resulted in immense casualties and suffering. The situation in Darfur continues to escalate, underscoring the challenges in achieving peace and stabilizing the region amidst widespread violence and displacement.
