UN Expresses Serious Concern Over Attacks on Civilians in Sudan

The UN has expressed serious alarm regarding ongoing assaults on civilians in Sudan. A recent air strike in North Darfur resulted in multiple casualties, exacerbating concerns over violence in populated areas such as Khartoum. The UN calls for adherence to international humanitarian law amidst challenges in accessing healthcare due to funding shortages.

The United Nations is expressing grave concern over the ongoing attacks on civilians in Sudan, particularly following a deadly air strike on a market in North Darfur. According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the air strike, which occurred approximately 40 kilometers northwest of El Fasher, resulted in numerous casualties. The UN is also troubled by escalating violence in populated areas, including Khartoum.

Dujarric further reported that artillery strikes in Khartoum killed and injured civilians during evening prayers at a mosque, alongside heavy shelling in Omdurman, which is Khartoum’s twin city. He reiterated the necessity for all conflict parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, emphasizing their responsibility to safeguard civilians and infrastructure.

The UN spokesman noted the adverse effects of ongoing hostilities and recent funding cuts on health services throughout Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region. It was highlighted that a significant proportion of attacks on healthcare facilities last month were reported in Darfur alone. Most regional medical facilities are left with only a short supply of resources, jeopardizing health care for the local population.

Despite these challenges, the UN and its partners are striving to address the increasing humanitarian needs, although they face funding shortages and accessibility issues due to the violence. The commitment to assist the affected populations remains a priority in light of the ongoing risks.

The UN is deeply concerned about the continuing violence against civilians in Sudan, particularly following recent air strikes and artillery attacks. The organization stresses the importance of protecting civilian lives under international humanitarian law while facing challenges in delivering essential health services due to funding cuts and ongoing hostilities. The commitment to assist those in need persists despite significant obstacles.
