Fiji is currently facing significant challenges in addressing HIV/AIDS and drug use, as highlighted by Renata Ram, a UNAIDS Pacific adviser. She revealed that the skills needed to effectively combat these issues are lacking, leading to an increase in HIV/AIDS cases within the country. In earlier years, the focus on HIV was overshadowed by non-communicable diseases (NCDs), diverting essential resources away from HIV programs.
Historically, funding for HIV initiatives began to decline in 2012, despite Fiji and other Pacific Island nations maintaining a low prevalence of the virus. At that time, it appeared that the situation was under control; however, this perception did not translate into sustained efforts. Ram noted that various crises, including those related to NCDs, dengue, Zika, and natural disasters, required government attention and resources that were redirected away from HIV-related concerns.
Moreover, Ram emphasized that Fiji’s healthcare system is not robust enough to support sustained HIV programs. This gradual neglect pushed HIV off the Ministry of Health’s agenda, leading to a critical oversight. From early 2018 onward, there were indications of increased drug use, initially observed among individuals with disposable income and sex workers. Over time, this issue has expanded significantly, suggesting a growing concern that requires urgent attention and strategic planning.
