Tragic Consequences of RSF Shelling in North Darfur: Casualties and Ongoing Conflict

Shelling by the RSF in North Darfur resulted in nine civilian deaths and 17 injuries. The Sudanese Air Force attacked and repelled RSF forces, destroying vehicles and causing casualties. Additionally, SAF bombed a displaced persons camp, leading to injuries. The ongoing conflict in El Fasher has caused widespread destruction and displacement of residents.

On Sunday, shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, resulted in the tragic death of at least nine civilians and injured 17 individuals, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division (SAF). In another incident during Eid El Fitr, the RSF attacked El Obeid in North Kordofan, leading to the death of a child and injuries to eight others.

The Sudanese Air Force successfully repelled an RSF ground assault on El Fasher, destroying four military vehicles and reportedly killing numerous RSF fighters. Additionally, airstrikes targeted a supply convoy, destroying 12 combat vehicles and forcing the RSF to retreat. In a separate incident, five displaced persons sustained serious injuries when the SAF bombed the Shangil Tobaya camp in North Darfur on Saturday night.

The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees accused the SAF of indiscriminately targeting infrastructure and civilian homes. Efforts to obtain comments from the SAF were unsuccessful. Previously, SAF warplanes bombed a weekly market in Tora, North Darfur, near El Fasher, reportedly causing dozens of casualties, with some estimates suggesting hundreds of deaths.

Maj Gen Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, expressed determination to break the RSF siege on El Fasher, asserting that “victory was looming on the horizon.” Since May of last year, El Fasher has experienced ongoing conflict as the RSF seeks to capture the final government-controlled stronghold in Darfur. This violence has led to the widespread displacement of the city’s population and extensive damage to infrastructure, including hospitals and water sources.

The recent shelling in El Fasher by the RSF has resulted in significant civilian casualties and further instability in North Darfur. Despite the Sudanese Air Force’s efforts to repel RSF attacks and address the resulting humanitarian crisis, the ongoing conflict continues to displace populations and destroy vital infrastructure. The situation reflects the dire need for resolution and peace in the region, as tensions persist amid the RSF’s siege of El Fasher.
