Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarkable ability to engage with global leaders, asserting that PM Modi is a key figure in today’s geopolitical landscape. During a visit to India, President Boric acknowledged Modi’s influence, stating, “President Modi, you have the status nowadays that you can talk to every leader in the world.” He noted Modi’s outreach to leaders including those from the United States, Ukraine, the European Union, and Latin America, a feat that no other leader can claim presently.
In expressing his gratitude for India’s welcome, Boric remarked, “I want to thank you for the warm welcome that we have received here…for the past 16 years, no one from Chile has come here, and in that 16 years, India has changed a lot.” His visit marks the first State visit from Chile to India in over a decade and highlights the significant changes and developments in India’s international presence during that period.
Furthermore, President Boric emphasized Chile’s desire to strengthen ties with India, stating, “Chile wants to work on our relationship with India.” He affirmed that Chile has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at fostering cooperation in various areas, including cultural exchange and research in Antarctica, which he described as significant leveraging points for both nations.
During his visit from April 1-5, 2025, President Boric is accompanied by key ministers and business leaders, focusing on establishing deeper connections with India. His travel itinerary includes visits to prominent cities such as Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. This maintains continuity in diplomatic relations established 76 years ago, first meeting PM Modi at the G20 Summit in November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro.
The visit received an honorable reception upon arrival at Air Force Station Palam, with further discussions held at Hyderabad House. The Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, also engaged with President Boric, reinforcing the collaborative commitment between the nations and their intention to advance bilateral relations.
