Ghana Freedom Party Disappointed by Electoral Commission’s Disqualification Decision

The Ghana Freedom Party has voiced disappointment over the Electoral Commission’s disqualification of its candidates despite correcting all indicated errors. Following threats allegedly made by EC officers, the party resubmitted their nomination documents only to face disqualification again. The party is now considering legal action or awaiting further developments regarding the situation.

The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has expressed its dismay at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) recent decision to disqualify its candidates for the imminent elections. This decision came despite the party’s diligent efforts to address all previously indicated errors in its nomination submissions. According to the GFP, they meticulously reviewed and corrected the issues pointed out by the EC prior to resubmission. Nana Poku, an aide to Roman Fada, disclosed in an interview with Osuani Afrifa on Kasapa News, that the party had received alarming communications on November 8 regarding threats made against their candidates by certain individuals allegedly affiliated with the EC. Consequently, the party leadership proactively contacted an EC officer to address these threats and subsequently sent a formal complaint regarding the intimidation of those endorsing their candidates. Upon returning to Kumasi, the GFP was informed by the EC to correct additional errors in their candidacy documents. Following their rectification of these mistakes, which they assert were errors on the part of the commission, they resubmitted the documentation. However, they were met with further surprise as the EC ultimately disqualified their candidates. The leadership of the Ghana Freedom Party is now convening to explore their next steps, contemplating legal action or waiting for developments from the EC. This situation arises concurrently with the disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, GFP’s replacement flagbearer, due to conflicting issues found on his nomination form. The announcement regarding Kubi was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa during a press briefing held on November 12.

The Ghana Freedom Party has faced a significant setback following the Electoral Commission’s disqualification of its candidates for the upcoming elections. This decision has raised concerns regarding the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. The party contends that they adhered to the commission’s requirements by addressing all noted discrepancies in their nomination forms prior to the resubmission, reflecting their commitment to comply with electoral guidelines. Furthermore, reports of intimidation by alleged EC officials against party candidates have prompted the leadership to take formal action to safeguard their interests.

The Ghana Freedom Party’s disqualification from the elections despite correcting all indicated errors raises critical questions about the integrity of the Electoral Commission’s processes. The party’s claims of intimidation by EC officials further complicate the situation, suggesting a disruption in fair electoral practices. As the GFP deliberates on its next actions, including potential legal recourse, the broader implications for democracy and electoral integrity in Ghana remain to be seen.
