CENCO’s Call for Interfaith Prayer and Peace in DRC

The Catholic Church’s Secretary General, Msgr. Donatien Nshole, announced support for an interfaith prayer event on February 9 at the request of the Justice Minister, aimed at aiding military forces and displaced individuals in the DRC. The Church is committed to prayer for peace, urging focus beyond soldiers to all victims of conflict, and emphasizing offerings for charitable works. Msgr. Nshole noted their purpose is not to win wars but to promote peace.

In Kinshasa, Msgr. Donatien Nshole, Secretary General of CENCO, discussed an interfaith prayer initiative proposed by the Minister of Justice, Constant Mutamba, aimed at supporting the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the local population affected by violence on February 9. While willing to pray for peace, the Catholic Church emphasizes prayer for all, including enemies and victims of conflict, highlighting the need for broader compassion during crises. Msgr. Nshole reiterated that the Church would participate in the initiative in its own manner, aligning with its teachings on charitable offerings, which call for support for the less fortunate, including the military and displaced families. Ultimately, he stated, “We do not pray to win the war, but to obtain peace.”

The initiative for religious cooperation seeks to address the dire humanitarian and security challenges in the eastern regions of the DRC, ravaged by various armed groups. By uniting multiple faiths in prayer and raising funds for the FARDC and vulnerable populations, leaders express a commitment to peace and healing in a war-torn region. The Catholic Church’s involvement underscores its long-standing tradition of advocacy for peace and support for all affected by conflict.

This initiative reflects a collective desire for peace in the DRC amidst ongoing violence. The Catholic Church’s approach, emphasizing prayer for peace and compassion for enemies, reinforces its mission of love and charity. Supporting military members and affected communities aligns with the Church’s teachings, demonstrating an endeavor not just for military success but for genuine healing of society at large.
