BCCI’s Rajeev Shukla Clarifies Government-Centric Approach to India-Pakistan Cricket

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla stated that the resumption of cricketing ties between India and Pakistan is contingent upon government approval. During his visit to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, he acknowledged Pakistan’s successful hosting but reiterated BCCI’s policy regarding bilateral matches requiring home venue play. The final decision rests with the Indian government, which considers various factors before making its choice.

Rajeev Shukla, the Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), recently addressed the issue of reinstating cricketing ties between India and Pakistan. He emphasized that the commencement of a bilateral series hinges solely on the approval of the Indian government. Shukla made these statements during his visit to Lahore, where he was invited by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to attend the Champions Trophy semi-final.

During his visit, Shukla commended Pakistan for effectively hosting the Champions Trophy, marking the first time in 29 years that the nation received rights to an International Cricket Council (ICC) event. He stated, “It is the (Indian) government’s decision. Whatever the government of India says, we will go as per them.”

Shukla further acknowledged that the desire for matches between India and Pakistan is strong among fans; however, he expressed skepticism about playing a bilateral series at a neutral venue. He clarified that, according to BCCI policy, such matches should occur on each country’s home soil. “This has been BCCI’s consistent policy,” he noted, stressing that government consent is a significant factor in these decisions.

The BCCI Vice-President pointed out, “Every other country would offer to host India-Pakistan, who would not? We (BCCI) keep our point in front of the government but they decide after their deliberations.” Shukla articulated that governmental decision-making involves thorough consideration of various facets, ensuring all aspects are evaluated before any announcement is made.

In summary, Rajeev Shukla has articulated the BCCI’s position on bilateral cricketing ties with Pakistan, highlighting that governmental clearance is a prerequisite for resuming play. He praised Pakistan’s successful hosting of the Champions Trophy yet maintained that any future matches must occur on home soil, as this aligns with long-standing BCCI policies. Ultimately, the resolution of this matter lies in the hands of the Indian government.
